How a reface works

  1. 01

    Measure what you have

    Glass gauge and feelers. You get the numbers it arrived with, not just the ones it leaves with.

  2. 02

    Flatten the table

    Most problems are here. A table that is not flat leaks, and no reed fixes that.

  3. 03

    Cut the rails and curve

    Both rails even, the curve set to the facing length you want rather than the one it had.

  4. 04

    Play it, then post it

    Tracked, with the before and after measurements written on the docket.

Mouthpiece refacing

Most mouthpieces that come to me are not broken, they are just not true any more. The table has gone slightly convex, one rail is thinner than the other, and the reed is sealing on three sides out of four. You feel that as a piece that is hard to start quietly and dies at the top.

What I do about it is flatten the table, recut the facing curve to a length that suits how you play, and match both rails to that curve so the reed seals evenly all the way down. If you want the tip opened or closed while it is on the bench, that happens at the same time.

Turnaround is usually a week or two once it lands, depending on what else is in front of it. I will tell you before you post it.

Saxophone repair

General repair work on the horn itself. Pad replacement and seating, regulation, key fitting, dent work, and the full setup that makes a secondhand horn play like it is supposed to rather than like it has been sitting in a cupboard.

Repair pricing is not on a list, because horns vary far too much for that to mean anything. Describe what it is doing and send photos, and I will give you a number.

Priced on what the mouthpiece is made of rather than on the brand, since that is what actually determines the work.

I reface for tenor, alto, soprano, baritone, clarinet, bass clarinet. Sopranino sax and Bass saxophone are on request.

Stainless steel, chromium cobalt, rhodium plated $260 AUD Plus a $30 AUD file fee. The harder metals blunt good files, so the fee covers replacing them.
  • Prices are in Australian dollars and cover the refacing work itself.
  • Express post within Australia is a flat $17 AUD.
  • Unless you have a PO box, I will always send trackable with signature required on delivery.
  • Anything I made gets its facing looked at again for nothing. That does not expire.
